The Gentiles - Part II
Dr. Joe Temple

We have been discussing “A Decade of Prophetic Fulfillment.” Toward the end of 1960 and in the early part of 1970 the newspapers have been recapping the events of the sixties, discussing various events and their implications in world history. We began to think about how many prophetic events have been fulfilled during the last decade according to the Word of God, and it occurred to us that it might be helpful if we should present some of these things to you. Before we begin our discussion, shall we bow our heads together for prayer:

Our God, we thank Thee for the opportunity of opening the Word. We recognize our need of Thee, and we ask that the Holy Spirit will grant anointing for the free ministry of the Word. We ask, our Father, that there may be that enlightenment of heart for those who hear, that the truth of Thy Word may be received. For we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

A Review

To set a bound for our discussion we suggested that we would think with you about the streams of prophecy as they have flowed through this last decade. In I Corinthians, chapter 10, verse 32, the Apostle Paul said:

I Corinthians 10

32Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

We suggested to you that this verse of Scripture indicates among other things that as far as God is concerned there are not black people, white people, yellow people, brown people, red people; there are Jews, Gentiles and the Church of God. This should set suitable boundaries for the discussion of this subject.

Streams of Prophecy

We ask you to visualize a reservoir of prophecy from which for a long time only two streams flowed. One of them we labeled the Jews and the other we labeled the Gentiles. Then a momentous event occurred in the history of the world–the Day of Pentecost. It was the day when the Holy Spirit came to the earth and the Church of God was actually born. That day marked the beginning of a third stream ofprophecy. The Jewish stream continues to flow, the Gentile stream continues to flow, and with them a new stream which began to flow on the Day of Pentecost, the Church of God. We suggested to you that if we should examine the stream of prophecy related to the Church of God, we would have a representative picture of what has occurred prophecy–wise during the past decade.

When we speak of prophecy, you understand that we are not speaking of “the vain imaginings of men” (Romans 1:21), or of what the Apostle Peter referred to as “cunningly devised fables” (II Peter 1:16). We are not fitting the Word of God into current events; we are taking the Word of God and showing how current events fit into the Word of God, either in complete fulfillment or in partial fulfillment.

The Jewish Nation as a Fig Tree

One of the symbols which God uses in His Word to describe how he deals with the Jewish nation is the fig tree. When we discussed with you the stream of prophecy related to the Jewish nation, we spoke to you on three fig trees. One was a barren fig tree, symbolical of the nation of Israel as it was when Jesus Christ was here. The cursed fig tree is symbolical of the nation of Israel after the city of Jerusalem was taken by the Gentiles and the Jews were scattered throughout the world. The restored fig tree was presented in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 24, when the Lord Jesus Christ said, “When you see the fig tree begin to put forth its leaves, then you will know that summer is nigh.”

Regathering In Israel

At the beginning of the last decade, the fig tree had two leaves which were unmistakably recognizable. One of the leaves was that the Jews were being regathered to their homeland, regathered from the four corners of the world. The other leaf was that they were re-established as a nation, recognized among the nations of the world, with a seat in the United Nations.

During the last decade five other leaves began to appear. The Jews have repossessed portions of their land which they had not held for centuries. They repossessed them by military might and are holding them by military might, though pressure is being brought to bear from many areas to encourage them to relinquish the land which they have gained.

Restoration In Israel

Another leaf which has appeared on the tree we labeled “the leaf of restoration” because the land of Israel itself has been restored in a marvelous, miraculous way; it is developing into a fertile land that recalls the prophetic proclamation, “The desert shall blossom as the rose” (Isaiah 35:1). We are aware that that is a millennial passage, but it suggests that the wheels are already turning.

Still another leaf has appeared; it is one we called “the leaf of regaining,” because it is a symbol of Israel's regaining control of the old city of Jerusalem–a thing which the Lord Jesus Christ said would occur shortly before He comes back to this earth. He said, “When the city of Jerusalem is no longer ruled over by Gentiles, then the times of the Gentiles will be fulfilled” (Luke 21:24).

Another leaf which appeared in an unusual way we called “the leaf of controversy.” God said that in the end time He would make Jerusalem a burdensome stone and a cup of trembling for every nation that burdened herself with her(Zechariah 12:2,3), and indeed Jerusalem is a cup of trembling and a burdensome stone in this generation. In the last decade she has been the subject of discussion at every council table around the world. Nobody knows what to do with her. Nobody knows how to handle her.

The Temple In Israel

The last leaf that we called to your attention we lableled “the temple,” because during the last decade an actual movement has been underway for the rebuilding of the temple which is to exist when the Antichrist makes his appearance upon the earth. The temple will be in existence when the Antichrist, in the middle of the Tribulation, takes a pig into the most Holy place and sacrifices it upon the altar. He will bend all religion to the worship of himself, taking the lives of men who dare to resist. There have even been reports of the ordering of stone from the state of Indiana for the rebuilding of that temple. So we pursued the stream of the Jewish nation through the last decade.

The Stream of the Gentiles

There was another stream you will recall–the stream of the Gentiles. We began to travel down that stream, and to discuss some significant events in the stream of Gentile prophecy during the last decade which indicated to us that the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. These events are found in the political, moral and social spheres.

First, we considered events in the political sphere. According to prophecy, in the end time there are to be ten federated states of Europe. The Scriptures we gave for that are Daniel 2, Daniel 7, Revelation 13 and Revelation 17. Events which have occurred in the last decade and which point to the fulfillment of the prophecy are related to the desires of men who have dedicated their lives to the creation of this federation; to the mental attitudes of younger Europeans who no longer wish to be called British, French, or Spanish, but prefer to be called Europeans; and to actions such as the creation of NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and the Common Market. When Britain enters the Common Market, ten European nations will be in close alliance for a specific purpose–and Britain is standing on the threshhold.

The King of the North

In the end time the king of the north will come into unusual prominence and will have to be reckoned with, as we find in Daniel 11:30, and in Ezekiel 38 and 39. This prophecy is being fulfilled through the rise and spread of Communism. Though we are endeavoring to carry on what men call a peaceful coexistence with Communistic countries, we are aware that they have not given up their plan to subjugate the world. The king of the north must be reckoned with.

The King of the South

The Word of God says in Daniel, chapter 11, that the king of the south will become prominent in the end time. This is a reference to Africa. There was a time when if you wanted to describe the darkest kind of heathenism, you referred to dark Africa. But Africa is developing a fermenting nationalism which is bringing African nations to the front in the family of nations. All of this fulfills prophecy related to the king of the south.

The King of the East

The Word of God has something to say about the kings of the east in Revelation, chapter 16, verse 12. This prophecy has been in process of fulfillment in a tremendous way during the last decade, as is indicated by the emerging influence of Asia in world affairs. There was a time when Africa and Asia were only continents about which you read in geography books, but in the last ten years this has been changed in drastic fashion.

The Moral Sphere of Prophecy

I have been going over with you what we have considered so far, so that we may all be thinking along the same line. I want now to consider with you another sphere in relation to the stream of prophecy connected with the Gentiles–the moral sphere. What events involving morality have occurred in the last ten years that fit into God's prophetic plan? Please turn to Romans, chapter 13, where we find several words related to the moral sphere of prophetic fulfillment that I want to call to your attention:

Romans 13

11And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
12The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
13Let us walk honestly, as in the day; [notice carefully] not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
14But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

The Apostle Paul is saying to the Romans, “The time of the Lord's coming is nearer than when we first believed; therefore be sure that you are not caught up in the things which will be evident in great intensity when the coming of the Lord actually arrives.” You may say, “But Paul said that nearly two thousand years ago and the Lord isn't here yet.” That is right. I am not going to stand here and say that He may not come for another thousand years because I don't believe that. I am going to say to you that I don't know when He will be here, but I do know that every one the the things that began in the days of the Apostles has been increased in intensity down through the centuries. The more intense they are, the surer you can be that the coming of the Lord is drawing nigh.

The Problem of Drunkenness

Did you notice in verse 13 the word “drunkenness?” What is there about drunkenness in the last decade to indicate that the coming of the Lord is drawing nigh? Statistics indicate that drunkenness is the number 3 hospitalizer in the world, the number 3 reason for folk being hospitalized. WHO, the World Health Organization, not only reports what I have just said to you, but says the United States has the dubious honor of replacing France with the highest incidence of alcoholism in the world. I am not proud of that. This has happened in the last decade. Oh, yes, ever since we can remember there has been a town drunk, but we are not talking about that. We are talking about the alcoholism which is filling our hospitals and ruining our homes. It has increased in America in the last decade until American has replaced France as the leading nation in the world. Late reports coming in indicate that we will not have this dubious honor long, for Sweden is about to take it away from us. But it doesn't much matter which nation leads; the fact remains that alcoholism is on the increase world wide.

The Problem of Sexual Freedom

Did you notice another word in that text, the word “chambering.” It is not a word that is used every day, but when you know what it means you will realize that it could become a common word in our everyday vocabulary. This word “chambering” is a translation of the Greek word koite , from which we get the word “coitus,” which is a reference to sexual union. The word “chambering” expresses the sexual freedom that has grown by leaps and bounds within the last decade. Oh, yes, down through the years it has been more or less expected that young people would sow their wild oats. Even Christian parents have not been to disturbed when their sons and their daughters got into some kind of devilment; they have said it was part of growing up. But this is not a temporary thing that lasts for a couple of years while somebody is sowing wild oats. Sexual freedom has become the order of the day in accordance with the prophecy that toward the end time sexual freedom would be rampant.

The Organization Siecus

What evidence have we had of this in the last decade? There is an organization the name of which is SIECUS, and the purpose of which is a program of sex education in the schools. This is not an innocent organization that it trying to develop a program to keep dirty words from being written on restroom walls. It is not an organization that will simply keep little boys and girls from getting the wrong idea of sex from their next door neighbors, though that is what they want you to believe. It is very definitely a planned program, under the guise of freedom of education, to break down the moral restraints which by God's mercy this nation has known and which have given us a measure–notice what I am saying–a measure of respectability.

If the SIECUS sex education program is permitted to go unhindered, then the same things will happen here that have happened in the Scandinavian countries where this type of sex education in the schools developed fully in the last decade. There is no reason to expect anything different. It will result in a manner of life marked by premarital intercourse as the order of the day, by a mounting number of abortions, and by efforts to liberalize the laws related to abortions. All these things go hand in hand with the program that is advocated by the organization to which I refer. After all, something will have to be done to take care of unwanted babies if you break down the barriers and restraints that keep them from being conceived. Statistics from the Scandinavian countries tell us that the crime rate, alcoholism and abortion have tripled since this program has been in effect. Suicide among young people has increased not in the last decade, but in the last year, by 35%.

An Example

At the end time there will be this sexual freedom, according to the Word of God. Does anything further in the last decade indicate that it is shaping up? Not only SIECUS and the experience of the Scandinavian countries bear witness, but an individual in our own nation would have to be either blind or deaf or both if he were not able to recognize this trend. Look at the movie section in the newspapers of any city. I challenge anybody to prove to me that Hollywood has any purpose other than the one it has always had to demoralize the young people of this nation. Watch your newspaper for one week and write down the ratings which Hollywood itself has given to the movies. You will recognize that being shown publicly are movies that you used to see at stag parties before you knew the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour. Very little is being done about it, and very little will be done about it, and I don't plan to start a program against it. I am merely mentioning to you the fulfillment of the prophetic Word of God.

The Problem of Music

Now about our modern songs. Most of us of the older generation do not know what is being done in music today. We used to have a young man in our Fellowship who was with a local radio station, a disc jockey. It suddenly occurred to him that the words of the songs being played were astounding, and he made a little study of it himself. He realized that the words of the songs suggested all manner of sexual freedom. He wrote a letter to some of the Pastors in this city and said, “This station refuses to play these songs. We hope that you will stand with us in our decision.” I don't know what the outcome will be.

I said to this young man, “I hardly ever hear music like that; it just doesn't do anything for me.” What is the phrase–“It doesn't turn me on”? He said, “Usually the music is so loud that the average person doesn't hear the words, but the generation to whom they are geared hears them, and they make a dent in their thinking that they are not even conscious of. They do what comes naturally because it has been hammered into their minds.”

A doctor who is in charge of an audio-clinic in one of our large universities said that the music of this present generation is not only demoralizing because of the words–please understand that I do not blame the present generation for it–but it is demoralizing because of what is is doing to the audio-perception of the people involved. He said that more than 65% of the young people whose hearing was tested in that audio-clinic had hearing equivalent to that of a 65 year old man. The reason he gave was the loud music to which young folk constantly listen.

What is all this? As far as I am concerned, it is the fulfillment of what is expressed in the word “wantonness” in Romans 13:13; it is a fulfillment of God's prophecies concerning the end time.

The Problem of Irreverence

Another sign that we are in the end time is found in II Timothy 3:2. Men are to become “blasphemers, unthankful, unholy.” These three characteristics could be summed up by the word “irreverent.” Irreverence has increased in the last decade to such an extent that there is not a church in a town no larger than the city of Abilene that dares to leave its doors unlocked. If they should, someone would come in, and lacking a reverence for God, would write obscene words on places dedicated to the sacred worship of God. Irreverence is seen in vandalism as much as it is seen in any other way.

Not only is irreverence seen in vandalism, but it is seen in the language which is adopted by ordinary people. Christians, be careful. Be careful that you are not swallowed up in these things that are happening in the end time. I resent preachers saying that Jesus Christ was a revolutionary. I resent preachers saying that Jesus Christ was a hippie of His generation. Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God! It is the epitome of irreverence for anybody to try to reach the so-called “now generation” by making them think that Jesus Christ was what they are trying to be. As far as I am concerned, it borders on blasphemy.

Irreverence! Individuals with long hair and moccasins bragging about wearing “Jesus shoes.” Irreverence! It is part of the age in which we live. The thing that grieves me most is that Christians are being caught up in the web of it, thinking it is necessary to use the music and the words of a hip generation to win them to Christ. I don't believe it is. I believe that men are won to Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God clearly presented, and I think it is part of the fulfillment of the prophecies concerning the end time that individuals who love the Lord and want to reach people are caught up in the vortex of irreverence which has gripped us during these last ten years. All that was extra; it won't cost you anything.

The Problem of Excesses

To continue thinking about the moral sphere. The prophecy in Luke, chapter 21, verse 34, suggests that in the end time men should not be “overcharged with surfeiting.” The word “overcharged” means “burdened.” The word “surfeiting” is a translation of the Greek word kraipale , which describes a condition of headaches and grogginess and dizziness. I am of the opinion that it is being fulfilled in the after effects of psychedelic drugs and music. The word “psychedelic” refers to a peace of mind based upon a false premise; the drugs and the music produce headaches and grogginess and dizziness. Oh, yes, there was a time when men had an occasional hangover, with a head that would split if you droped a book on the floor. I am not talking about old fashioned hangovers. I am talking about the condition in which many people find themselves today because of their pursuit of psychedelic drugs, music, lights, colors. It is all fulfillment, I believe, of the prophetic Word.

II Timothy, chapter 3, verse 4, indicates that men in the last days will be lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God. In some statistics involving the last ten years it was revealed that churches have been outnumbered by taverns by 175,000. What does it suggest if there are 175,00 more taverns in the United States than there are churches? Well, it looks as if somebody loves pleasure more than God. I am aware that statistics are relative, but what I have suggested to you from the beginning I re-emphasize: We are merely pointing out indications of the fulfillment of the prophetic Word of God.

The Problem of Rioting

Let me now share with you some things which are occurring in the social sphere and which are related to the prophetic Word. In Romans 13:13 there is another word, “rioting.” It is translated from the Greek word komos and it means “to let loose,” “to let fly,” “to lie outstretched.” We have a dignified word for it today: Demonstration. If you throw a coke bottle and hit a cop on the head, you are demonstrating. God's Word calls it rioting. If you decide that you have aright to a certain thing and you are going to get it, and you lie down in front of the door of the building in which you think it is, and if people tramp on you, they are using violence; you are merely exercising your rights by lying outstretched in front of whatever you may be demonstrating against. The Bible said that would occur. We have seen a lot of it this past decade. Where will it end? Rioting, demonstrations, anarchy the order of the day–surely you must have been blind if you have not seen more of it in the last decade than you ever have before.

The Problem of Starvation

II Timothy, chapter 3, verse 1, says that in the end time perilous times shall come. In Matthew, chapter 24, verse 7, three related perils are prophecied–famines, pestilences and earthquakes. We don't call it famine in this generation; we call it starvation. You know how people have been dying of starvation in Biafra, in India. Did you know that 10,000 people a day die of starvation in our generation? According to other statistics of the last decade, 3-1/2 million people a year died of starvation. Our own Secretary of Agriculture has said that if things go as they are going now, there will not be enough food for anybody by the mid-l980's. These are statistics. They are relative, but keep in mind that they are indications of the fulfillment of the prophetic Word.

The Problem of Illness

Famines, pestilences and earthquakes! According to this verse, pestilence is to increase in intensity. We don't call it pestilence anymore. We call it a virus. There is no name for many types of virus. There is no way to isolate them, but they are increasing in intensity. Nearly everbody thought that we were through with flu epidemics on a large scale, but you have been reading in your newspapers about the flu epidemics in Europe, in Great Britain, and in Turkey especially, where whole villages are being wiped out. This is another indication of how close we are to the end of the Age.

The Problem of Earthquakes

What about earthquakes? “Oh,” somebody says, “we have always had them.” Yes, we have, but they have increased in intensity in the last ten years. More people have died in the last ten years as a result of earthquakes than died in this way in the previous 100 years. Earthquakes must be increasing.

The Problem of Crime

What shall we say about perilous times in relation to the perils of living? What about crime growth? J. Edgar Hoover said in a recent report that in the United States alone in the last decade, crime has grown twice as fast as the population. That is an astounding thing to think about. I read in the newspaper today, that crime has increased in Great Britain in the last ten years to what they call alarming proportions. In our country the greatest crime increase has been among 15 and 16 year olds; in Great Britain it has been among children 10 to 12 years of age.

An Illustration

Perilous times? I think one of the most significant illustrations of the perilous times we are facing is the necessity for the President of the United States to have a special limousine. It was built originally for President Johnson and was meant to be used by his successors as long as it is practical to use it. It cost $500,000. It was built to withstand small scale military attacks. The bubble, or canopy, is made of plastic twice as thick as that used in the fighter planes of the Air Force. The car is encased in more than two tons of armor which could stop a 30 caliber bullet or a barrage of Molotov cocktails or both. It runs on four specially designed truck tires inside of which are steel discs covered with hard rubber; these would enable it to travel at a speed of 50 miles an hour if all four tires were flat. I was amazed to read that in America–a peace loving nation, a land of freedom–our own President cannot travel through a public crowd without provisions such as this. Beloved, I don't think we need any other illustration of perilous times. Perilous times indeed are upon us.

The Increase In Knowledge

One last thing I would suggest to you in the social sphere. We find in Daniel 12:4 that the Spirit of God says that as the end of the Age approaches, knowledge will be increased. Many illustrations could be given. We call to your attention one that is very significant to me: Fifty per cent of all the inventions that have ever been invented have been invented in the last decade. Surely this is an indication that knowledge has increased. It is interesting to me that many of the inventions which have been perfected in the last ten years are inventions which I believe are setting the stage in a very real way for the coming of the Lord and for the coming of the Antichrist–inventions related to travel, inventions related to space, inventions related to communications. All of these set the stage for the end time.

When I examine the stream of prophecy that flows through the Gentile world, I have to come to the conclusion that the coming of the Lord is nearer than when I first believed.

Shall we bow our heads together for prayer:

We thank Thee, Father, for the opportunity of sharing these things. We thank Thee for the hope of the Lord's return. We do pray that we who are believers may live in the light of His return, not falling prey to the temptations which are about us, but looking up and knowing that our redemption draweth nigh. For we prayy in Jesus' name. Amen.
